The Washington Redskins have named Dr. Robin West as the team’s new director of sports medicine, the team announced Wednesday.

West is the first head female physician to be hired in the NFL. She is also the only head female physician in Major League Baseball, serving in that position with the Washington Nationals.

“I’m excited to be to joining the Redskins’ medical team and helping to provide the highest quality medical care, where we focus to improve performance, decrease injuries and provide immediate access to an elite group of medical specialists,” West said during Wednesday’s press conference.

West also said that football is as “safe as it’s ever been.”
