Jacksonville Jaguars running back Denard Robinson spoke to the media for the first time since he fell asleep behind the wheel of his car and rolled into a retention pond, reiterating the fact that he was not impaired.

Robinson said that he had fallen asleep at a stoplight when he drove his car into the pond on July 3 around 4 a.m.. His cousin was also in the car and both had to be woken up by police officers before realizing the front end of the vehicle was in the water.

When asked about the cause of the accident, the 25-year-old said drugs and alcohol were not involved.

“If that was the case, I would have had a DUI,” Robinson said via ESPN.

Robinson was questioned and screened after the incident, and as found to not be impaired.

He was issued a citation for reckless driving on July 14 and the Jacksonville Sheriff is currently investigated the actions of the responding officers.

Robinson also opened up about feeling lucky that no one was injured in the accident.

“I feel blessed,” he said. “It could have been a situation where I couldn't be talking to y'all right now. The situation could have been way worse than that. I could have hurt somebody or killed somebody. I’m truly blessed that nothing happened to nobody.”
