Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson and singer Ciara moved their wedding from North Carolina because of the state’s controversial transgender bathroom law, according to The Knot.
The two would eventually be married in London, after deciding against having the ceremony in Paris at the same time as Fashion Week.
“I did the whole thing—three times,” wedding planner Mindy Weiss said. “They were first getting married in North Carolina, but they called it off due to the transgender bathroom laws. But it was really done.”
Wilson has recently been outspoken on his belief that athletes should use their status to promote social change.
“Well, I think we all have a responsibility,” he said last month, according to ESPN. “It’s not just on athletes, it’s not just on coaches, it’s not just on anybody in particular. It’s on all of us. I think ultimately it comes down to love and appreciating one another and respect for one another.”
House Bill 2, which requires transgender individuals to use restrooms that match the sex on their birth certificates, has been called discrimination by its opponents, including the Obama administration.
