AP Source: Giants re-sign offensive tackle Will Beatty

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) The New York Giants have re-signed offensive tackle Will Beatty just two days before their preseason finale against the New England Patriots.

A person familiar with the situation confirmed the move on Tuesday night. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the Giants have not announced the deal.

A second-round draft pick by New York in 2009, Beatty was released in February after missing the 2015 season with a pectoral muscle injury.

The Giants had felt they could get by this season with the same offensive line as last year, but the unit has not played well and the offense is ranked last in the preseason in average total yards, passing, first downs and third-down efficiency. It is next to last in average points.

It remains to be seen where Beatty fits in. From his rookie season through 2014, he played in 82 regular-season games with 63 starts, eventually becoming the left tackle.

Ereck Flowers, a first-round selection last year, has taken over at left tackle. Right tackle Marshall Newhouse may now have to fend off a challenge by Beatty to keep his starting job.

Beatty worked out for the Giants on Tuesday and passed a physical after the team decided to sign him.

Beatty was a fixture on the line until tearing a pectoral muscle during an offseason workout in May 2015. He underwent surgery and was placed on the reserve/physically unable to perform list. Beatty returned to practice in October, got hurt again and had another operation.

Also Tuesday, the Giants made 12 roster moves to get under the 75-man limit. The moves involved only two players with regular-season experience; safety Cooper Taylor was waived, and offensive tackle Byron Stingily was placed on injured reserve with a concussion.

Taylor, a fifth-round draft pick in 2013, has appeared in 16 games, including six last season. Stingily played in 20 games with nine starts for Tennessee and Pittsburgh from 2012-15.

Third-year defensive back Bennett Jackson, a 2014 sixth-round draft choice who missed each of the past two years after undergoing knee surgery, was waived.

Also released were running back Marshaun Coprich; wide receivers K.J. Maye and Kadron Boone; cornerback Joe Powell; offensive lineman Shane McDermott; defensive tackles Davon Coleman and Greg Milhouse and defensive end Mike Rose.

Tight end Ryan Malleck, a rookie free agent, was waived/injured.
