Cam Newton addresses unrest in Charlotte after police shooting
Panthers quarterback Cam Newton was asked Wednesday about the unrest in Charlotte following the fatal police shooting there on Tuesday.
“I’m believer of justice and I’m a firm believer of doing the right thing,” Newton said. “I’m an African American. I’m not happy with how justice has been dealt with over the years, the state of oppression in our community. We also, as black people, have to do right by ourselves. We can’t be hypocrites. It’s not the fact that things are happening, it’s the way that they’re being treated after they happen.”
Keith Lamont Scott, 43, was shot to death by police in Charlotte on Tuesday. The incident sparked protests in which 16 police officers were injured.
In an Instagram post on Wednesday, Newton also addressed Colin Kaepernick’s decision to protest police brutality by kneeling during the national anthem.
