Texans vs. Cowboys Preseason Game Canceled so Players Can Be With Their Families
The Houston Texans' Thursday night preseason game against the Dallas Cowboys in Arlington has been cancelled so that players may return to Houston to be with their respective families, the team announced Wednesday.
The Texans opted not to travel back to Houston after a preseason game against the Saints due to Hurricane Harvey and have been practicing at the Cowboys' Star practice facility in Frisco.
“The Houston Texans have made the decision to travel back to Houston after local authorities have now found a safe route for the team to drive home today,” the team said in a statement. “The fourth preseason game scheduled for Thursday night in Dallas will be cancelled. At this time, the priority of our organization is getting our players, coaches and staff back home to be reunited with their families, many of whom have been evacuated from their homes and are currently sheltered. The team feels it is imperative to get back home to help the Houston community recover from the devastation of Hurricane Harvey.”
The game was originally scheduled to be played in Houston and the Cowboys offered to host it at AT&T Stadium after the storm hit, with ticket sales going toward storm relief. The Texans’ owners will now make a donation equal to what ticket sales would have generated.
Hurricane Harvey hit Texas hard with flooding. Some areas of Houston had a record-setting 51 inches of rain. The storm hit first over the weekend before making a second landfall near the Louisiana and Texas border. At least 10,000 people have been rescued from their homes. The death toll has mounted to 30.
