Panthers cut 3-time All-Pro P Lee, QB Webb to get down to 53

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) The Carolina Panthers acquired cornerback Kevon Seymour from the Buffalo Bills on Saturday in exchange for wide receiver Kaelin Clay and a 2019 seventh-round draft pick.

Carolina was left a little thin at cornerback after injuries to Zack Sanchez and Teddy Williams in the preseason finale on Thursday night. Sanchez was waived-injured and Williams was placed on injured reserve.

Seymour was a sixth-round draft pick by the Bills in 2016. He played in 15 games last season with three starts, logging 14 tackles and three passes defensed. He added eight tackles on special teams.

Clay is an undrafted rookie who impressed during the preseason with exceptional speed. He had a 58-yard reception against the Pittsburgh Steelers, but the Panthers feel they are deep at wide receiver.

The Panthers also are fielding trade calls for kicker Graham Gano. They kept two kickers on the roster Saturday, including seventh-round pick Harrison Butker.

Earlier, Carolina cut three-time All-Pro punter Andy Lee and third-string quarterback/special teams player Joe Webb to trim its roster to 53 players.

Carolina will go with just two quarterbacks - Cam Newton and Derek Anderson.

The Panthers kept less-experienced and less-expensive punter Michael Palardy, who filled in last season after Lee was placed on injured reserve with a hamstring injury. Lee, who was an All-Pro in 2007, 2011 and 2012 playing for San Francisco, is expected to receive interest from the Arizona Cardinals now that he is a free agent.

The Panthers also cut quarterback Garrett Gilbert, running back Jalen Simmons, fullback Darrel Young, wide receivers Austin Duke, Mose Frazier and Keyarrius Garrett, tight end Eric Wallace, offensive lineman Blaine Clausell, defensive ends Bryan Cox, Zach Moore and Larry Webster, defensive tackles Eric Crume and Toby Johnson, linebackers Zeek Bigger and Ben Boulware, cornerbacks Jeff Richards and safeties Damian Parms and Dezmen Southward.

Wide receiver Brenton Bersin, offensive linemen Gino Gradkowski and Chris Scott and safety L.J. MCray were placed on injured reserve.
