Khalil Mack faces his former team for the first time since last season’s blockbuster deal that sent him to the Chicago. He leads the Bears into the first of the NFL’s four games in England this season, as they face the Raiders on Sunday at White Hart Lane in north London.

The fortunes of the teams have changed drastically since the Raiders surprisingly dealt Mack, who was holding out for a better contract at the time, after the final exhibition game before the 2018 season started. The Raiders received first-round picks in 2019 and 2020, a sixth-round pick in 2019 and a third-round pick in 2020 in exchange for Mack, a second-round pick in 2020 and a conditional fifth-round selection in 2020.
Mack’s arrival in Chicago turned a solid defensive unit into a dominant one, helping the Bears win the NFC North and ending a seven-season playoff drought. He had 12.5 sacks in 14 games and is off to another fast start with 4.5 sacks in Chicago’s first four contests.
The Bears defense has looked every bit the Super Bowl-caliber part in helping them attain a 3-1 start, limiting opponents to five touchdowns and 45 points after stifling Minnesota in a 16-6 victory last weekend. Chicago (3-1), though, has yet to see its offense ignite, and could be in for further struggles without starting quarterback Mitch Trubisky.
Trubisky suffered a dislocated left (non-throwing) shoulder injury and has been ruled out for this game, which puts Chase Daniel under center. Daniel was effective in relief of Trubisky vs. Vikings, completing 22 of 30 passes for 193 yards and a touchdown, and threw for 515 yards and three TDs in splitting two starts last year when Trubisky was hurt.
But Chicago’s offense has not made the progress expected under second-year coach Matt Nagy. The Bears have scored just 66 points in their four games, with 28 of them coming in a first-half outburst against the hapless Redskins.
The Mack trade was one of two franchise-altering deals by the Raiders (2-2) last season as they also dealt wide receiver Amari Cooper to the Dallas Cowboys for a 2019 first-round pick. This year’s first-round pick they received from the Bears in the Mack trade was used to select running back Josh Jacobs, who leads all rookies with 307 yards and is ninth overall.
Oakland held off Indianapolis, 31-24, last weekend on the road. The Raiders started fast with touchdowns 66 seconds apart on their first two possessions, highlighted by a 60-yard scoring run from Trevor Davis, and safety Erik Harris sealed the victory with a 30-yard interception return for a touchdown with 2:09 to play. Derek Carr threw for 189 yards and a pair of scores, as the Raiders had a near-perfect balance of 189 yards passing and 188 rushing.
The White Hart Lane venue is the newest billion-dollar stadium in London and is home to Tottenham Hotspur of the English Premier League. It opened April 3 after significant delays, and this will be the first NFL game played there. The field will be synthetic turf, which is under the grass used for Spurs home games.
