The Saints (3-1) were put on the back burner in terms of title aspirations when Brees suffered a thumb injury in their Week 2 loss to the Los Angeles Rams. While New Orleans has a capable backup now under center in Teddy Bridgewater, many wondered if the defense could rise to the occasion with the expected dip in offensive proficiency without their future Hall of Fame quarterback.

After getting timely turnovers in a surprising win at Seattle, the defense delivered another emphatic answer with a gem of a performance Sunday night in beating the previously undefeated Cowboys, 12-10, at home.

Bridgewater did just enough offensively, completing 23 of 30 passes for 193 yards with an interception, and Alvin Kamara chipped in with 69 rushing yards. Michael Thomas was an effective option for Bridgewater, catching nine passes for 95 yards and is tied for the NFL lead with 34 receptions. The 12 points were the fewest scored by the Saints in a home win under Sean Payton.

Tampa Bay (2-2) gets another crack at getting over .500 for the first time this season after accomplishing what the Saints could not–defeating the Rams on the road. The Buccaneers turned two second quarter interceptions into touchdowns, while racing to a 21-0 lead. Former Ram Ndamukong Suh rumbled 37 yards with a fumble after a strip-sack by Shaquil Barrett to seal a 55-40 victory last Sunday. Jameis Winston turned in his second straight excellent performance, throwing for 385 yards and four touchdowns to give him 765 yards and seven TDs in that span.
