When the schedule originally came out for this season, many pointed to this contest as one of the best matchups of the NFL season with expectations Mahomes and Colts quarterback Andrew Luck would turn the game into a shootout. Those plans were scuttled when Luck shockingly retired before the season, but the Colts (2-2) have stayed in the thick of things in the AFC South with Jacoby Brissett under center.

Even without throwing for a touchdown pass in last Sunday’s, 34-30, win at Detroit, Mahomes has been operating at a higher level. The reigning NFL MVP has thrown for 1,510 yards and 10 TDs without an interception, while completing 67.9% of his passes.

Kansas City’s passing offense has not missed a beat without injured No. 1 receiver Tyreek Hill, who did return to practice after missing the last three games with a collarbone injury. Tight end Travis Kelce and Sammy Watkins have picked up some additional catches, combining for 47 receptions and 734 yards, while rookie wideout Mecole Hardman and Demarcus Robinson have shown occasional sizzle while totaling 22 catches for 417 yards and five touchdowns.

The Chiefs (4-0) continue to look fragile defensively at times, with Sunday’s win the third time they have allowed at least 26 points and 400 yards. Kansas City, though, is just the fifth team in NFL history to start 4-0 while recording at least 400 yards of offense in each game.

Indianapolis was unable to shake off a slow start in losing, 31-24, at home to Oakland last Sunday. The Colts yielded a touchdown on their opening defensive drive and were then gashed for a 60-yard touchdown run on the first play after going 3-and-out on their first offensive possession.

Brissett, who threw for 265 yards and three TDs, did have a chance to lead the Colts on a game-tying touchdown drive, but he threw a pick-six that Erik Harris returned 30 yards with 2:09 to play to seal the victory.

Despite the misstep, Brissett has looked far more comfortable than he did in 2017 after being acquired from New England right before the start of that season when Luck was sidelined. Brissett has thrown for 911 yards and 10 TDs with only two interceptions and has been sacked just six times.
