Report: Patrick Mahomes Expected to Miss at Least Three Weeks With Knee Injury

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is expected to miss at least three weeks after dislocating his knee in Thursday night’s game against the Broncos, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports. 

Mahomes dislocated his right kneecap while attempting a quarterback sneak in the second quarter of Thursday’s win over Denver. He was able to walk off the field after the team’s medical staff popped the bone back into place but was quickly ruled out for the rest of the game. 

Mahomes is expected to undergo an MRI on Friday that will determine whether he has any ligament damage associated with the dislocation that could keep him out longer. 

The injury immediately concerned many of Mahomes’s teammates. 

“He was saying, ‘It’s out, it’s out,’” Kansas City guard Laurent Duvernay-Tardif told reporters. “Nobody really understood what he meant at that time and then we saw it. ... That’s when we started panicking. Not panicking but seeing that he was not all right.”

Matt Moore took over for Mahomes and led the Chiefs to victory. The veteran backup completed 10 of 19 passes for 117 yards and a touchdown. 

The Chiefs do not have a third quarterback on the active roster. Kyle Shurmur, an undrafted rookie out of Vanderbilt and the son of Giants head coach Pat Shurmur, is on the practice squad.
