The Jets dropped to 1–6 on the season with a 29–15 loss in Jacksonville against the Jaguars. Sam Darnold threw three interceptions in the game, bringing his total to eight on the season compared to just five touchdown passes. Jaguars rookie quarterback Gardner Minshew threw three touchdown passes with no interceptions, outshining the Jets' heralded quarterback prospect in the process. Even against the struggling Dolphins, Darnold will need to play better to give the Jets a chance to win games.
Miami comes into this matchup on a short week. The Dolphins lost 27–14 to Pittsburgh on Monday Night Football to fall to 0-7 for the season. Miami has seen some improvement in its offense since switching back from Josh Rosen to Ryan Fitzpatrick at quarterback. The team had a 14–0 lead after the first quarter on Monday but didn’t score the rest of the game. Fitzpatrick went 21-for-34 with 190 yards and two touchdowns, but also two interceptions. They nearly defeated the Redskins and led the Bills on the road with Fitzpatrick at the helm. With this home game potentially being their best chance to win, the offense could be the catalyst to get them into the win column.
