The Carolina Panthers face an almost must-win game for their playoff chances Sunday when they host an Atlanta Falcons team looking to pull its second straight upset of an NFC South rival.

The Panthers (5-4) are second in the NFC South, two games behind the New Orleans Saints for the division lead, but also 1 ½ games behind the Minnesota Vikings for the second wild-card spot in the NFC. Carolina missed out on a chance to gain ground on both the Saints and the wild-card race last Sunday, losing 24-16 at Green Bay.

A fourth-quarter rally came up one yard short as running back Christian McCaffrey was tackled before crossing the plane of the goal line on the final play of the game. McCaffrey finished with 108 rushing yards and a touchdown, moving within 11 yards of his second straight 1,000-yard season.

Kyle Allen threw for 307 yards and a touchdown, but also was responsible for two turnovers -- one fumble and one red zone interception -- that resulted in 10 points for Green Bay. DJ Moore had season highs of nine receptions for 120 yards, notching his second straight 100-yard game, and the second-year wideout has a chance to set career highs in both categories in this game. With 54 catches for 684 yards, Moore needs two receptions and 105 yards to establish personal bests.

Carolina’s run defense again struggled, giving up 163 yards and three touchdowns. The Panthers are yielding 136.7 yards per game on the ground, and the 17 rushing TDs are the most allowed in the league.

The Falcons (2-7) essentially kept the Panthers in the NFC South race by stunning New Orleans 26-9 on the road last Sunday. Matt Ryan returned from a one-game absence due to injury to throw for 182 yards and two touchdowns, and the much-maligned Falcons defense delivered a stellar effort in the red zone -- denying the Saints touchdowns on three different drives that went inside the Falcons’ 10-yard line.

Atlanta also recorded six sacks -- nearly doubling its season total after entering the game with seven for the season. The Falcons held the Saints to 310 total yards and 3 of 12 on third downs.

Ryan has enjoyed plenty of success against Carolina in his career, going 14-8 overall and winning six of the last seven meetings between the teams. He has thrown for 2,227 yards and 15 touchdowns with only three interceptions in those seven games and powered Atlanta to a sweep of last season’s series with 511 yards and five TD tosses.

Julio Jones has 71 catches for 1,233 yards and six touchdowns in 13 career matchups with the Panthers, highlighted by his 12-catch, 300-yard effort in 2016 that is the sixth single-game highest total in NFL history.
