There are few things tougher than beating the New England Patriots, and beating them coming off a bye week could qualify as one of those. Having two weeks to stew since their first loss of the season, the AFC leaders look to bounce back Sunday when they face the Philadelphia Eagles on the road. This is the first meeting between the teams since the Eagles stunned the Patriots 41-33 in Super Bowl XLIX.

Giving Patriots coach Bill Belichick an additional week to break down an opponent seems to border on unfair, and the six-time Super Bowl winner has usually made the most of that opportunity. New England is 14-5 under him coming out of the bye week, including wins in four of the last five such contests.

The Patriots (8-1), though, had their aura of invincibility punctured in stunning fashion by the Baltimore Ravens in Week 9, losing 37-20 on Nov. 3. After holding opponents to three offensive touchdowns and 61 points in the first eight games, the cracks in the run defense became apparent.

New England was unable to contain dual-threat quarterback Lamar Jackson and running back Mark Ingram, who combined for 176 of Baltimore’s 210 rushing yards. Jackson also sliced up the defense, as the Patriots failed to record an interception for the first time all season, while throwing for 163 yards and a touchdown.

Baltimore’s offensive efficiency also kept Tom Brady stuck to the bench as New England had the ball barely more than 22 minutes. Brady did what he could, throwing for 285 yards and a touchdown, but he was also picked off once and the Patriots’ other turnover -- a fumble by wide receiver Julian Edelman -- was returned for a touchdown.

New England’s lack of a consistent running game also finally became a factor. The Patriots have been held under 80 rushing yards in their last three games, a combination of a makeshift offensive line and second-year running back Sony Michel failing to make the most of the holes that do appear. The Pats rank 23rd in rushing at 92.9 yards per game.

Philadelphia (5-4) is tied with Dallas atop the NFC East and is seeking its third straight victory. The Eagles are also coming off their bye week, having defeated the Chicago Bears 22-14 at home in Week 9 on Nov. 3.

Doug Pederson’s much maligned defense delivered a stellar effort in the first half, limiting Chicago to two first downs and 14 total yards. Ex-Bear, running back Jordan Howard got the better of his former team, totaling 82 yards and a touchdown and helping the Eagles chew more than eight minutes off the clock on a fourth-quarter drive that helped them seal the win.

Howard looks to finally be finding his groove in the Philadelphia backfield, totaling 178 of his 525 yards in the last two games. The Eagles rank 11th in rushing at 127.3 yards per game, but that number spiked to 182 per contest in the last two games.
