49ers Will Face a Future Dilemma With the General Manager Position

Assistant general manager Adam Peters may be staying this year, but it is a dilemma the 49ers will face again in the future.

The 49ers recently faced a potential scare.

Assistant general manager Adam Peters was rumored to be a possible candidate to become the general manager of the Texans following the NFL draft. However, current Texans general manager Nick Caserio completely eradicated that smoke at his pre-draft press conference.

Regardless of legitimacy, this was still a potential scare for the 49ers. Losing Peters, who factors into countless players drafted, would be a gut punch. He's the one who does the real heavy lifting when it comes to scouting and evaluating the players for the 49ers, not John Lynch. He's just a figure head and essentially head of public relations for the 49ers. It is a terrifying thought to envision with this recent rumor and one that even foreshadows what is to come.

The 49ers will face a future dilemma with the general manager position. In the last few years, Peters has been linked to other teams for their vacancies at general manager. And now after this last scare valid or not, adds to that chain link. It is only a matter of time before Peters ends up taking a job elsewhere. That is something the 49ers must avoid at all costs. They need to keep him aboard. A lot of the late round magic. like in the fifth-round of the draft, can be accredited to Peters and the staff he brings in.

Lynch on the other hand is a public speaker. He's a lightning rod for questions and addressing current state of affairs. Whenever the 49ers need someone to take the heat, Lynch is that guy. He is basically a fall guy for the 49ers in every sense of the word. It's why he is always the only one that goes to the NFL scouting combine and not Kyle Shanahan. And speaking of Shanahan, should the team ever plummet in success, then Lynch will surely be the scapegoat for Shanahan.

If it is a choice between Lynch and Peters, then the 49ers have to go with Peters. However, I don't think Lynch will be fired. The 49ers won't do that to him. They'll let him know that they want to install Peters into his position first, then Lynch will either resign on his own accord or go back to commentating on TV. If Lynch wants to stay around, I could see the 49ers promoting him the same way the Broncos did with John Elway years ago. Put him in a spot where he is more so a figure head than someone who really influences decisions. That way the 49ers can continue to roll Lynch out there to speak to the media and do damage control of any sort and shield the team.

The 49ers will not have to worry about this now, but it is a dilemma that will inevitably confront them.
