Could Brock Purdy Go From Mr. Irrelevant to MVP?

The San Francisco 49ers are now 5-0 in large part due to Brock Purdy's success under center. Is it possible we see the final pick of the 2022 NFL Draft win the Most Valuable Player award?

After a dominant 42-10 49ers victory over the Dallas Cowboys, which featured a 4-touchdown performance from Brock Purdy, it is possible that San Francisco currently has the next MVP of the league.

The Associated Press NFL MVP award is dominated by the quarterback position. The award primarily goes to the most impressive quarterback of the season with their team's success in mind. With Purdy producing at a high level and leading the team to an impressive 5-0 record, it makes sense to consider him for MVP.

Purdy Good Numbers

Entering Week 6 of this season, Brock Purdy currently has totaled 1.271 passing yards (8th in the NFL) and nine touchdown passes (Tied-7th) at the pace of 9.3 yards per pass attempt (2nd in the NFL). Purdy has been one of the most efficient quarterbacks, completing 72.1 percent of his passes (2nd in the NFL) with zero interceptions thrown thus far.

To be top 10 in these categories with an undefeated record while not throwing an interception, it would be silly not to have the conversation for MVP, at least.

Purdy is coming off his impressive four-touchdown pass performance on Sunday Night Football, which featured one of the deepest rivalries in all of sports. The second-year quarterback dominated the Cowboys, who entered the game with the No.1 ranked defense.

The week prior, Purdy had an impressive game against the Arizona Cardinals in which he only logged one incomplete pass. Now, with an undefeated record to start the year, the 49ers are currently averaging 33.4 points per game with Brock under center.

Nobody can deny the level of efficiency the former seventh-round pick displays.

The Competition

Other players deserve to be seriously considered as well. Players that come to mind are Josh Allen and Tua Tagovailoa, who also rank at or near the top in certain statistical categories at the quarterback position. They both have 11 touchdown passes and 5 interceptions on the season, with more passing yards than Purdy.

However, the turnovers combined with team records could give Purdy the advantage in the MVP race. Josh Allen and the Bills have lost two games, including a loss to the Jets in which Allen threw 3 interceptions to go along with 2 fumbles and lost 1.

Tua Tagovailoa and the Dolphins' one loss this season was against Josh Allen and the Bills. While Tagovailoa leads the NFL in passing yards, he does have 5 interceptions to Brock Purdy's zero. Tua also has 11 touchdown passes to Purdy's 9, but Purdy also has 2 rushing touchdowns on the season, which ties them both for total touchdowns.

Jalen Hurts is someone else who can play his way into the conversation as the season progresses due to his dual-threat ability and the fact that he is the only other QB with a 5-0 record this season.

The season is young; players will fall off from the conversation, and others will enter it. Currently, Purdy is the leader of the best team in the NFL, and that alone puts him at or near the top of the ladder. If that persists and he keeps pace statistically, we could see one of the most incredible narratives unfold.

At a minimum, we have a good idea of who the finalists may be when January comes around.

The ultimate goal for all these players is to win the Super Bowl, which they all have a chance to accomplish. But we could see Brock Purdy go from Mr. Irrelevant to MVP. No team is playing better than the 49ers, and there are not too many quarterbacks we can definitively say are playing better than Purdy.
