49ers Sign Matt Pryor

Pryor, 28, has started 24 games in the NFL, including 10 at guard, which means he's versatile and experienced.

PHOENIX -- The 49ers seem to have filled all the holes on their offensive line.

On Monday, they signed veteran right tackle Matt Pryor, according to general manager John Lynch. Pryor most likely will back up Colton McKivitz, whom the 49ers re-signed to a two-year contract this offseason. And McKivitz most likely will replace Mike McGlinchey, the 49ers' former starting right tackle who signed with the Denver Broncos a few weeks ago.

Pryor, 28, has started 24 games in the NFL, including 10 at guard, which means he's versatile and experienced. Unfortunately for the 49ers, he isn't particularly good. Ideally, he should be a backup. And it seems that's how the 49ers will use him.

"Colton is the guy right now," Lynch said on Monday. "We just signed Matt Pryor, a guy who has started some games in this league, but we like Colton. We have for a long time. His confidence, that game he filled in for Trent Williams, went in there and did a really good job as a left tackle, he has been a good swing tackle -- Colton is a good player. He'll get a crack at that job. There will be a competition, but we're excited about him being able to man that job."

McKivitz has started just five games in his career, so if the 49ers are wrong about him, they always can turn to Pryor, who at least has a track record. Although it's possible neither player will prove to be a quality starter. The 49ers are going cheap at right tackle.
