What Brock Purdy Thinks About the 49ers Quarterback Room Dynamic

This is where all the "cliquey" shenanigans with the 49ers can come into play.

The quarterback room of the 49ers could have some awkwardness.

Brock Purdy is the starter over former first round pick Trey Lance despite being on the mend from a ruptured UCL on his throwing arm. Not to mention that Sam Darnold was signed in free agency with a contract full of playing incentives. All three quarterbacks are gunning for the starting job, so keeping a friendly and even professional relationship could be difficult.

However, early on it does not appear to be an issue. Purdy gave his thoughts about the 49ers quarterback room dynamic following open OTAs on May 23.

"The dynamic is great," Purdy said. "Brandon has played for a numerous amount of years and his experience with [Bengals quarterback] Joe Burrow has been great. To have him come in and just see how he thinks about football and obviously Sam, where he's been, and how [Panthers quarterback coach] Josh McCown has helped him out.

"And then obviously Trey, and we've been around [quarterbacks coach Brian] Griese and [offensive passing game specialist Klint] Kubiak [and assistant quarterbacks coach Klay Kubiak], so I think just all of us as a collective just understanding what our scheme is, what Kyle is teaching us, and just helping each other out within the meetings and seeing things from different perspectives from all of us because we've all had some kind of experience of playing, so it's been great so far. The dynamic is great. We all get along really well and I'm really excited moving forward with this group of guys.

I really wonder how this would all play out if Purdy was healthy from the jump. It probably wouldn't change too much because the 49ers aren't having true and meaningful practices as they would in training camp. That is where things can get awkward without stars and starters on the team getting to showcase their body language as to who they could favor as the starting quarterback.

This is where all the "cliquey" shenanigans with the 49ers can come into play. By the time training camp arrives, Purdy should be very close to throwing and participating in the practices. That is when the real dynamics of it all will be tested.
