Key Individual Matchups
Bears RB Khalil Herbert vs. Chiefs LB Leo Chenal
The Chiefs will be hurt by not having their best linebacker for tackles, Bolton. Chenal is a former Wisconsin player and teammate of Jack Sanborn who was a third-round pick but is still working for a breakout year. Herbert hasn't been used enough by the Bears, just 16 rushes so far and is averaging 3.9 yards a carry as the No. 1 back. It's possible the Bears could get more carries to Roschon Johnson as the rookie's stock continues to rise. Chenal is an above-average pass defender.
Bears WR DJ Moore vs. Chiefs CB L'Jarius Sneed
Sneed has been limited in practice with knee soreness and hasn't had the best season so far as Pro Football Focus grades him 82nd overall out of 98 cornerbacks and 79th in coverage. Moore had his first strong game for Chicago last week with six receptions for 94 yards.
Bears DE DeMarcus Walker vs. Chiefs RT Jawaan Taylor
Walker picked up the pace as a pass rusher last week with more consistent pressure and has three sacks and five QB hurries in the past against the Chiefs. His strength is being stout on the edge and that should play well against the Chiefs when Mahomes is trying to get outside to throw. Taylor has been nursing a shoulder injury but was removed from the injury report. He hasn't had a strong start to his Chiefs career after coming over in free agency. He is tied with Bears tackle Jones for the league lead in penalties with six.
Bears DE Yannick Ngakoue vs. Chiefs T Donovan Smith
Ngakoue has had good history going against Mahomes with three sacks and nine QB hits. He is playing against a veteran tackle new to the Chiefs, too, former Buccaneers tackle Donovan Smith. While Smith has been solid in the past, PFF grades his effectiveness as lower than both Bears tackles Darnell Wright and Jones so far, at 53rd out of 71 tackles graded.
S Elijah Hicks vs. Chiefs WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling
No doubt Mahomes will try to challenge inexperienced Hicks with Valdes-Scantling's 4.37-second speed on a deep ball or two. Hicks is starting for the third time as a replacement for injured Jackson (foot). Valdes-Scantling's hands have been issues at times, and he has one TD catch against the Bears.
Bears LB Tremaine Edmunds vs. Chiefs TE Travis Kelce
Kelce will be 34 years old in a few weeks but it doesn't seem to be an issue, although he missed the opener with an injury. He's catching passes in the seam and should be able to challenge Edmunds in the Tampa-2 zone. Edmunds is second on the Bears in tackles (23) and already is ascending in pass coverage with a low 79.7 passer rating against when targeted, according to Sportradar.
Bears T Darnell Wright vs. Chiefs DL Chris Jones
The Chiefs have moved Jones around to different points on the line of scrimmage. The 6-6, 298-pounder is more than a match for any Bears blocker and he could line up at guard across from Cody Whitehair, as well. Wright has given up one sack so far in his rookie year but overall has been the best blocker for the number of snaps.
