Report: Bears Could Have Doubled Down

Getting DJ Moore in deal may have kept the Bears from deciding on trading down twice in the top 10 in Round 1 says a Peter King report.

Ryan Poles chose immediacy over a historical course when he took the trade down with Carolina involving wide receiver DJ Moore.

At Poles' press conference last week he talked about how he had the chance to take a deal with an extra No. 1 instead of Moore.

However, in Peter King's latest Football Morning in America he reveals Poles could have actually pulled off the double-down and traded with Houston first, then Carolina.

Poles told King he regarded that as historical by trading down twice in the top 10. However, the double-trade down would have required waiting.

"But my gut told me to trigger on it now," Poles told King.

The reasoning here was the quarterbacks had all performed and interviewed well at the combine and all four had created great impressions in the minds of personnel people. Their value could only go down.

"A lot of teams felt really good about some of those guys, but as you get further away from the combine, maybe there's a bad pro day or something that turns teams off," Poles told King.

The other significant comment from Kings's column was about the future, and the possiblity of taking defensive tackle Jalen Carter over an offensive lineman if he falls to No. 9.

After the pro day workout when he came in a reported 9 pounds heavier than he'd been only a few weeks earlier at the combine, and appeared to struggle to get through drills, it's difficult to see how this is even a possibility for the Bears.

The ninth pick is too valuable to take a chance on anyone who isn't going to immediately help their defensive front or offensive tackle situation.
