Chicago Bears and Detroit Lions In-Game Blog

Fourth Quarter
- Lions offsides on punt. First down Bears. Victory formation. That's the ballgame. Bears 24, Lions 14
- Bears punting with 1:07 left. Lions out of timeouts.
- Lions call timeout. Herbert in powers up the middle for 4.
- Robinson makes a catch along the sidelines but gets it taken away because Lions were called for interference.
- Offensive line doing the job. Huge hole for Williams and 8 yards.
- Williams breaks an inside run outside for 23 yards and a first down.
- Toss over the middle to St. Brown is short of the first down. It's fourth-and-1 and Goff under heavy pressure from Angelo Blackson throws wide of the mark. Bears ball. Another dumb Lions move. A field goal makes it a 1-score game.
- Two incompletions and Lions face third-and-10
- Lions get 8 yards and 6 on short passes to the 17 and go no huddle with 4:44 remaining.
- David Montgomery has a knee injury and is out for the game.
- Mack is on and alongside Quinn. Bears offsides again, this on Goldman, but Lions get a completion to the Bears 34.
- Completion for 3. It's third-and-1 and Goff throws too high for Raymond with Bush in coverage. Fourth-and-1 at Bears 43.
- Officials penalized Bears 6 yards on offsides. Strip sack to Gipson but ball went right to Goff and he ran for a few more yards.
- On third-and-2, the Bears are called for offsides on an incomplete deep ball.
- No Mack on this drive either. But Smith with a sack on first down. A screen to Raymond works for the 18.
- Lions start at their 34 after a 60-yard punt and 22-yard return.
- Williams gets back 7 on a screen. Bears will punt.
- Not sure of the logic on the pass play when Lions had strip sack but it wasn't sound They should have been working on the clock and running.
- Lions stop next run for 2 yards. Bears just trying to run clock. Third-and-32
- Strip sack of Fields and the ball is up for grabs but Fields recovers it himself well back for a 24-yard loss at the 19.
- Williams looks like the old pro in relief and he is. He bolts behind Whitehair and Peters for 7 yards and a first down
- Damien Williams on with 11:00 showing on the clock. Montgomery leaves with 105 yards.
- Montgomery being assisted from the field limping. Doesn't look good. Some type of leg injury.
- Back to running game and Montgomery gets 5 but is injured.
- Excellent Khalil Herbert return to the 31.
- Bears were in control of that game with Detroit last year in the fourth quarter and let it get away. Just saying.
- Bears blow the coverage and Raymond with a 23-yard TD catch. No one near him. With 11:17 to play. Bears 24, Lions 14
- KhaDarel Hodge with rare catch for 13 on slant.
- Gipson with the sack for an 11-yard loss but then St. Brown with a 28-yard catch at Bears 38.
- Swift another catch for 5 to Lions 48
- Offsides on Quinn but declined. Swift gets 3 up the middle after his 11-yard catch
- Lions dump off to Swift but a flag on play. Detroit has been talking a lot about their backs being good receivers. They catch a lot of dump offs when they are trailing by a lot of points.
- Quinn back on but not Mack as Gipson continues to get some valuable pass rush time on the left side.
Third Quarter
- Quarter ends on incompletion to Hockenson. Bears 24, Lions 7
- Incomplete to Kmet in end zone. Santos a 33-yard-field with 10 seconds left in quarter. Bears 24, Lions 7
- Montgomery flows forward with wall of blockers for 4. Goes over 100 but gives back 1 on second down.
- Lions lose a timeout after that challenge. Bears are at the 18. Even a Santos field goal here would be huge
- Replay looks like another A-Rob gem
- Fields finds Robinson in a cover-2 beater play to the sidelines and they go no huddle at Lions 18 after 27-yard gain. Play under review
- Wildcat again but Montgomery keeps it this time and gains 24. Now 2 yards short of 100.
- Fields to Kmet on bootleg pass for 6. Could have had 10 if he threw it earlier but he waited too late like Mitchell Trubisky used to do.
- Touchback and Bears at their 25. Better field position. They don't need another stupid penalty.
- Goff to Kalif Raymond for a 4-yard TD on play-action. Bush got there a second late to get the tackle with 3:19 left in third quarter. A six-play drive made possible by an atrocious official's call on a punt return. Bears 21, Lions 7
- Swift tries it up the middle out of the gun and is nailed for a half-yard gain. Third-and-goal
- Williams goes off right guard for 3.
- Vildor misses a tackle on short Cephus catch and Lions get a first down at the 8 after a 10-yard play
- Completion to St. Brown and a good shoestring tackle by Bush limits him to 4.
- Play-action to Hockenson for 22.
- There will be discussion of this play and what should Bears do. Next time Crawford should hit the returner even harder.
- Lions ball at Bears 44 now
- Fields throws incomplete on short toss to Goodwin as he is hit. Bears punting. Big hit on the play by Xavier Crawford after a 45-yard punt. A flag thrown but I can't imagine what this is for. They call the Bears for interfering with him even though he had caught it. The Bears were hit with this when Cordarrelle Patterson was here. It's an awful call. He had the ball and was hit quickly. That's all it was. If that's a penalty, then they need to hand out flags and play flag football
- Montgomery for 4 off right tackle
- Montgomery gets 3 to the 12.
- Webster doesn't field a simple punt with no wind after a 56-yard punt. Rolls dead at the 9. Tarik Cohen can't get healthy fast enough.
- Down goes Goff. Sacked by Mack, who is apparently OK
- On second-and-20, a slant to Hockenson with a big hit from Deon Bush nets 11 and it's third-and-9
- Gipson knocks down a screen thrown a bit too early with Attaochu rushing off the back side.
- Swift pushes off to try and get pass, and it goes incomplete anyway. Lions penalized 10 yards on first down. St. Brown was also pushing off on the play. No one noticed.
- A 20-yarder in the middle of the zone to Cephus.
- Trevis Gipson in for Mack, who may have been injured on the strip sack and return.
- Return goes nowhere. Lions start at their 20.
- If they can block the play-action deep throws for him, Fields is fine.
- Williams sneaks in up the middle for 4-yard TD with 10:33 left in the third quarter. Fields now 8 of 12, 171 yards. Six plays, 77 yards. Bears 21, Lions 0
- After a 2-yard run, Fields drops one in over the shoulder to Mooney at the 4 yard line for 32.
- Wildcat run by Mooney around left end for 10 and then a beautiful play-action post to Robinson for 28. Bears at the Lions 38.
- Montgomery off left guard for 2.
- Bears at their 23 after punt. Ragnow has been ruled out now, as well.
- Hicks has been ruled out with his groin injury. Looks like the Bears won't have that Hicks-Goldman combo stuffing the inside after all.
- Shelley knocks away pass to Hockenson.
- Williams for 6 on cutback run on first down, then screen to Hockenson for 2 and it's third-and-2.
- Lions start at the 21
Second Quarter
- Lions interferred with Nsimba Webster trying to field the punt and no penalty is called. Bears are pinned back at the 4 and no doubt will try to run out the clock. Half ends.
- Incomplete to St. Brown. No one open and Goff did safe thing.
- False start and bad snap. Officials rule play dead. Tackle Penei Sewell, the big rookie, committed the penalty
- Okwara injury is to his foot and he has been ruled out
- Swift on draw for 6 and Lions timeout with 50 seconds left at their 45.
- Quinn stunts and comes up the middle to force an incompletion.
- Deflected pass intercepted by Amani Oruwariye at Lions 39
- Screen to Williams with receivers blocking gains 8 as clock ticks
- Montgomery for 2 yards and first down, then Fields double pumps and overthrows Marquise Goodwin at the sideline.
- First Allen Robinson reception goes for 8 over the middle. TWO MINUTE WARNING!!!!
- Montgomery a cutback run out right and gets 10.
- Bears use their second timeout as there's some confusion in the backfield with both running backs in the same formation.
- A spinorama by Fields on the blitz and he has Cole Kmet open but Kmet fell as the ball was overthrown.
- Ball is brought back to the Bears 23 after review of the forward lateral.
- Mack injured on the play and being attended to on sidelines. Got up and seem fine. Play being reviewed, most likely the lateral.
- Quinn strip sack, recovered by Mack and lateraled to Eddie Jackson. Almost a forward lateral. Bears ball at their own 45.
- After a 2-yard run, Lions with 4 minutes left in the half, get a 3-yard Williams run to the 3.
- Goff scrambles out of trouble and throws to St. Brown for 17 to Bears 9.
- Kalif Raymond breaks wide open on post route but is overthrown.
- No question on penalty. Swift loses on first down on TFL by Trevis Gipson.
- Mack puts pressure on and tips ball for incompletion but is called for hitting Goff's helmet and it's a first down.
- Bootleg pass is contained and Goff overthrows Cephus with Quinn in his face.
- Ogletree and Mario Edwards combine to stop Williams for 2.
- Williams gets 4 and then 9 on runs to Bears 42.
- JP Holtz with great coverage on a 54-yard punt by Pat O'Donnell. Lions at their own 43 with 8:00 left in half.
- Montgomery off left guard for 4 and Bears face third-and-8. Fields creamed on blitz as he threw. Incomplete.
- So now it's first-and-13. These are the kind of dumb presnap penalties the Bears can't have. Montgomery gets back 1 yard.
- At the 5, a false start by James Daniels
- With the way the Lions are running the ball and Hicks out of the game, the gamble is stupid, and also the passing down in the red zone just as dumb. Lions should have stuck with what was working, simply powering it up the middle.
- Goff flushed out and gets 2. Lions go for fourth-and-goal at the 5. Goff under pressure overthrows in the end zone. Bears ball. Trying to get it to Swift with Ogletree in coverage.
- Goff throws away pass on first down and on second down Quinn knifes in to stuff Swift for a 2-yard loss.
- Goff rolls out and hits a pass to Quintez Cephus to the Bears 5 for 33 yards. Holding on Bears is declined.
- Swift on a toss right gets 2. Third-and-2.
- Goff throws to Amon-Ra St. Brown for 6.
- Lions at their 43 and Williams barrels through with no one there to stop the run gains 11.
- Third down pass to Hockenson and Roquan Smith is called for pass interference.
- Two of the Lions' best players went out with injuries. Romeo Okwara is out with an ankle and center Frank Ragnow with a toe. Questionable returns.
- Santos kicks it out of the end zone.
- Play calling looks like a Bill Lazor invention. But maybe they'll tell us later.
- Montgomery fights through a crowd and powers in off the left side for a 9-yard touchdown. Six-play drive, 89 yards, the big play on a 2:53 drive was the 64-yard bomb from Fields to Mooney. Bears 14, Lions 0
- Peanut Tillman interviewed on the field for fans in the stadium, talking about being up for the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
First Quarter
- Fields with a very impressive scramble turned on the jets when a defensive back closed and got 11 to the 9 then went OB. Quarter ends. Bears 7, Lions 0
- Spinning to get a yard on the second-down play by Montgomery, Bears face third-and-4
- David Montgomery left end toss is jammed up. He still gets 5.
- Hicks has a groin injury and his return is questionable.
- Fields' best pass to date. Hit him in stride with a rocket throw and well behind the defense. The completion accounted for only 4 yards less than Fields threw for all last game.
- The bomb to Mooney goes for a completion of 64 yards to the Lions 26. No one near Mooney.
- Loss of 1 by Montgomery on first down.
- Ball was snapped by mistake, bounced off of Goff and went right to Bilal Nichols. A motion penalty on Goff is declined and Bears have the ball at the 11. Get out the turnover bucket. Fumble recovery for Nichols, who was in Hicks' position
- First and goal at the 8.
- Ball deflected by Jaylon Johnson incomplete but a deadball penalty. First down at the 8. Deon Bush couldn't come up with the broken-up pass. The catch is under review and Bears lose the challenge.
- Ogletree and Blackson stop Williams behind the line on first down at the 16.
- Williams picks it up off left guard after 3. Now at the Bears 15. This absence of Hicks is strange. No announcement of an injury.
- Williams off left guard for 5. Third-and-1.
- Swift up the middle again for 4. Akiem Hicks not on the field.
- An 8-yard run by Williams right up the middle. So far Eddie Goldman not a factor. Then a 21-yard pass to the sideline by Goff.
- A 7-yard bootleg pass to TJ Hockenson and a 5-yard Williams run makes it second-and-5.
- Jamaal Williams goes over left guard for 5.
- Lions from the 27.
- The Bears looked impressive on their first drive against Bengals at home, as well, but then bogged down and Andy Dalton was injured.
- Robert Quinn's sister Jasmine Camcho-Quinn, the hurdles gold medalist is in attendance and introduced to fans.
- Montgomery with six attempts for 31 yards on the drive.
- After a 1-yard toss to Marquise Goodwin around right side, Montgomery plows in off left tackle for a 4-yard TD with 8:49 left to end a 75-yard drive over 12 plays. Bears 7, Lions 0
- Left end toss to Damien Williams nets 10 to the 5 and OB.
- Fields to Mooney for 21 crossing route and the ball came in high or it might have gone for a TD. Bears go no huddle and Damien Williams gets 4.
- Bears go for it and Montgomery cuts off left tackle outside Jason Peters, breaks one tackle and gets 9. On first down Montgomery goes for 4 off right tackle.
- Third down pass to Mooney comes up short of sticks by a yard at 47.
- First Fields pass for 4 yards to Mooney. Hopefully they can get something more. Montgomery gets 2 on second down Third and 5
- Montgomery gets the first down but hesitated looking for a bigger gain than 4 yards. If he stuck with the original hole he would have had 10.
- From the 25 Montgomery rips up the middle for 9.
- Applause for Fields as Bears huddle
- Bears have won toss and elect to receive. They usually like to defer.
Pregame
- It might be the calmest wind ever at Soldier Field. 3 mph out of the south. Never happens that it's so calm in the day, anyway.
- What, exactly, was the point of signing Breshad Perriman before the season? He's inactive again.
- When Detroit gave up 19 points last week to Baltimore, it was the first time since Nov. 22, 2020 they allowed less than 30 in a game. In losing seven straight games the Lions have allowed an average of 36.6 points a game.
- Eddie Goldman being active gives the Bears a good shot at shutting down Detroit's running game considering it's Goldman and Akiem Hicks together inside finally again. First time since the December loss at Lambeau Field in 2019, and that had been their first game together since the game in London started against the Raiders. But the Lions have another way to use their running backs. Combined, they have the most receptions of any running backs room in the NFL.
The man who ran out of the end zone for the Lions is offering up thoughts on how Justin Fields needs to be used. He's right.
The @ChicagoBears on offense today should:
— Dan Orlovsky (@danorlovsky7) October 3, 2021
-be under center more than 10+ times
-use more PAP
-get Fields outside the pocket, especially early on, 6+ times
-8+QB runs/zone reads
-4+ screens
