Dak Prescott Signing Odds Have Bears High on List

The oddsmakers are all over the Bears as a potential landing place next year for Dak Prescott but it's merely a sign they only look at who is betting what and why there might be a possibility, not reality.

The Bears are one of the favorites for quarterback Dak Prescott's services next year if he doesn't return to the Dallas Cowboys, an indication of two things.

One is the Bears' tentative situation at quarterback for 2021 and the other is the oddsmakers taking into account only this.

Betonline.ag has set the odds at 7 to 1 that Prescott will throw passes for the Bears in 2021.

Only the Indianapolis Colts, at 6 to 1, are more likely according to the gambling site. The Los Angeles Chargers and curiously the Minnesota Vikings at 8-1 have the next best, followed by the Jacksonville Jaguars and New Orleans Saints at 9-1.

With Mitchell Trubisky's contract up after this year, it's understandable they would be at the head of any list for a quarterback who has been as successful as Prescott. His career passer rating is 97.0, he averages 7.6 yards per pass attempt and only throws interceptions 1.7% of the time. More importantly, the Cowboys haven't had a losing season since he became starter, he's played in three playoff games and last year was the first time he played on a team that didn't have a winning record.

What the oddsmakers are not taking into account is the cash involved.

The Bears will still have Nick Foles under contract for next year at a cost of $6.7 million against the cap. This isn't enough for great concern but enough to make signing someone difficult for one great reason which wasn't taken into account by the oddsmakers—the NFL financial situation due to COVID-19.

The Bears are projected to have only $31.7 million available in cap space at this point for next year, and that's using this year's cap. The projections of the cap going down $40 million would tend to make signing a quarterback who is demanding more than $31.7 million per year a bit more difficult to accomplish.

In a pretend world of betting and odds, it's easy to see why people believe the Bears would have a better shot than many teams at Prescott.

In the real world of cash and business, signing Prescott becomes something very unlikely unless the Bears decided to cut a number of highly paid veterans, like both of their starting tackles, a few key defensive players, and they decide to go without Allen Robinson II.
