Bills Hiring Bill Belichick? Rex Ryan 'Would Not Be Shocked'

The Buffalo Bills found themselves on the wrong end of playoff emotion on Sunday in a 27-24 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Divisional. Seven seasons under coach Sean McDermott has resulted in five postseason berths but just one just conference title appearance.

With a championship-worthy roster not getting any younger, many feel that Buffalo's Super Bowl window is closing rapidly after another failed season under McDermott.

But in order to salvage this championship window, could Buffalo look to take a major coaching swing by replacing McDermott?

Former Bills head coach Rex Ryan has a confident feeling about who Buffalo might select to replace McDermott in the event that he's fired.

During an appearance on ESPN, Ryan said that he "would not be shocked" if former New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick is Buffalo's choice at head coach should McDermott get canned.

“This is the craziest thing: Buffalo might be the spot where Bill Belichick goes,” Ryan said. “I’m just saying, if ownership thinks (Sean McDermott has) taken this team as far as (he) can, which I’m not saying that they should do it, but this could do it. Who could take us to the next level? Well, Bill Belichick. And I’m not saying that it’s definitely gonna happen, but I would not be shocked.

“I’m not saying it’s gonna happen. But I’m just throwing it out there. Believe me, I’m not just being reckless when I’m saying it. If you’re going to move on from him (McDermott), make no mistake, it’s for one guy. It’s for Bill Belichick.”

Belichick has already landed two interviews with the Atlanta Falcons and appears to be trending in that direction. Despite Ryan's comments, there's been no indication that the Bills have any Belichick-related plans or issues with McDermott.

Plus, McDermott deserves tons of credit for Buffalo's late-season turnaround. After falling to 6-6 headed into the Week 13 bye, the Bills rattled off five straight wins to win the AFC East and earn the No. 2 seed in the playoffs.

Time will tell if there's any truth to the Belichick-Buffalo connection, but for now, McDermott has proved he's deserving of another shot next season before facing more questions.
