Bills QB Josh Allen At Fault for Lamar Jackson vs. Ravens, Claims Richard Sherman

Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes did what was right for them. Are they also obliged to do what is right, two and three years in advance, for the next star QB up for a new deal?

There are a lot of dots to connect here. ... sort of "reverse-conspiracy'' dots. And at the end of the dots comes an interesting assertion: Lamar Jackson's contract dispute with the Baltimore Ravens is the fault of ...

Buffalo Bills QB Josh Allen?!

"When (Minnesota's) Kirk Cousins got his guaranteed deal, I thought quarterbacks from then on were gonna be like 'if it ain't guaranteed, I ain't taking it," former NFL standout Richard Sherman said via his podcast. "Then (Kansas City's Patrick) Mahomes took that B.S. deal, 10 years and wanted it to like half a (billion) ...

"When he didn't set it, then Josh Allen didn't set it,'' Sherman said ... Well, it wasn't "set'' for the next guy - the next guy being Jackson.

Last year, Deshaun Watson, who, after being traded to the Cleveland Browns signed a historic fully-guaranteed deal last offseason, set the bar for what Jackson desires. But Sherman is saying that because Mahomes and Allen failed to do the same, NFL teams can now deny the likes of Jackson the opportunity of getting a contract similar to Watson's.

Mahomes in 2020 signed a lucrative 10-year, $450 million deal with Kansas City.

Allen in 2021 signed a lucrative six-year extension with the Bills that will pay Allen $258 million. It includes $150 million guaranteed and an average salary of about $43 million per season.

Mahomes and Allen, it can be argued, did what was right for them. Are they also obliged to do what is right, two and three years in advance, for the next star QB up for a new deal?

While we see Sherman's point, we'll need to do some research. It's easy now to in an accusatory manner reflect on what Allen and Mahomes "should've done.'' But we wonder: During his fine 11-year career during which he signed four different contracts and made $80 million, did Richard Sherman sign his deals with consideration for the cornerbacks who would sign their deals two and three years later?
