Bills QB Josh Allen Facing Reality: 'I Can't Continue to Do This'

After suffering a UCL sprain last season and taking a consistent beating due to his aggressive style of play, will the Buffalo Bills' message of safety-first force quarterback Josh Allen to play smarter?

Could we see a different Josh Allen when the Buffalo Bills take the field in 2023?

Many conversations have been had about the aggressive nature of Allen when a play breaks down. Coming out of college, Allen was known for his strong arm, yet his ability as a runner has been shining since.

Bills' general manager Brandon Beane doing an interview hasn't shied away from pleading  with Allen to stop taking as many hits as he does in the open field. Now, the star quarterback has responded

“I can't continue to do this," Allen said. "I know when I'm using my youth, I feel like I can. But over the course of my career, I'm gonna have to learn to adapt and change. ... When that point [comes], I don't know. I guess I'll let my body tell me."

Allen will also need to improve the turnover bug unlike he did last season, leading the league in turnovers with 19. Putting your body on the line can certainly result in more kind of pain than one.

"But I do want to be, like I said, I wanna be the smartest quarterback with the football in my hands," he said. I don't wanna put the ball in harm's way.

Allen isn't by any means a Lamar Jackson or a Michael Vick-type player, but he is a proven threat in the running game. This has opened up the Bills' offense a little more, as teams have to account for the danger of Allen breaking contain, along with the threat of him in the read-option game.

After a UCL sprain last season, which at one point seemed like it could force the Bills' quarterback to miss time, the concerns about long-term durability are setting in.

Not only is wisdom coming with Allen's age, but maybe the contract negotiations between the Baltimore Ravens and Jackson is starting to make him realize how multiple injuries could cause him to lose money down the road.
