Broncos in 2020 Draft: Target Another QB or Build the Nest Around Lock?

The 2020 NFL Draft will be here before you know it and the Broncos have to devise their best team-building plan.

The Denver Broncos are in a precarious spot. The Broncos don’t have a franchise quarterback playing, but they might have one in potentia on the roster.

Does Denver build the roster up around the quarterback position, or do they keep swinging until they hit on a quarterback?

There has been a trend around the NFL of building up the roster, then going and getting a quarterback. The Seattle Seahawks, Dallas Cowboys, and even Philadelphia Eagles all have gone down that route with success. Of course, there was some luck involved, especially with the Seahawks and Cowboys.

You also saw the Cleveland Browns try and take an approach likes this, only to have failed. However, they built their roster as they took shots on various quarterbacks in the draft. Unlike the previously mentioned teams, they were not lucky.

Even the Kansas City Chiefs can be mentioned, though their situation was very different. They had a decent starter at quarterback in Alex Smith, but he wasn’t good enough to get them over the hump. With Smith in play, the Chiefs were able to build their roster, which was still largely intact when Patrick Mahomes took over.

Then you have teams that had bad rosters and went and took a quarterback. The biggest team that comes to mind are the Indianapolis Colts with Andrew Luck. The Colts had had Peyton Manning, but struggled to put a team around him. That trend continued with Luck and led to him seeking an early retirement.

However, the Colts over the last few years have been able to focus on building the roster because they had Luck. Because of that, the Colts have been able to play at a high level with Jacoby Brissett at the helm.

Where to go from here is a tough choice for the Broncos. If Denver handled Drew Lock differently, and he was able to get on the field, the team would have a better idea on which route would work best — building the nest or targeting another QB high in the draft.

Until the Broncos get some idea what they have in Lock, this is the debate will rage among fans and media, as well as internally at Dove Valley. I lay out the full scope of the issue in the video above
