Report: Broncos release WR Nick Williams

On the heels of the Denver Broncos releasing veteran defenders Zach Kerr and Dekoda Watson, the team has decided to cut bait with an offensive player.
Per Nicki Jhabvala of the Athletic, the Broncos released veteran wideout Nick Williams. Williams originally joined the Broncos a week or so into training camp this past July.
He entered the league as an undrafted rookie in 2013 and now has six accrued NFL seasons under his belt. The 5-foot-10, 184-pound wideout was brought into Denver to get a look-see as a slot receiver, while also getting some swings at punt returner.
Williams' odds of making the 53-man roster, despite his veteran experience, were never good. The Broncos are just too stacked and deep at the wide receiver position.
However, while the Broncos know who their slot receiver will be this year — DaeSean Hamilton — this team remains no closer to a resolution on the punt returner.
Williams factored into that decision but the Broncos have decided to cut him loose now, and with his release coming a few days before the waiver wire is flooded with 800 or so names, it might give him a better chance to catch on with another NFL club.
The Broncos could choose to keep six wide receivers, depending on how the team resolves the punt returner situation. Vying for that final spot are the likes of River Cracraft, Trinity Benson, Kelvin McKnight and Fred Brown.
With Williams' release, the Broncos' roster now sits at 87 players. The deadline to cut down to the final 53 is Saturday, August 31.
