Broncos WR Marvin Mims Details Botched Russell Wilson Call on Draft Day

Don't worry. This duo will have plenty of time to gel at Denver Broncos HQ.

If Russell Wilson is like the majority of Denver Broncos fans, he's excited about second-round wide receiver Marvin Mims, Jr. The Broncos traded up into the second round to secure Mims, who starred at Oklahoma.

Bringing 4.38-speed to the table and a versatile skill set that includes punt and kick return ability, there's much the 5-foot-11 and 183-pound Mims can offer the Broncos. Wilson, who still throws a great deep ball, might be licking his chops at the prospect of Mims taking the top off of defenses in the AFC West.

Wilson tried to get a jump on cultivating a relationship with Mims, calling him on draft night, but as the rookie detailed last weekend, the pair wasn't able to connect.

“Yeah, kind of an interesting story," Mims recalled when asked about whether he'd heard from Wilson since being drafted. "So he called me [and] I was on the phone with the Broncos, so I couldn’t answer. And then I didn’t get back to my phone until like two o’clock that night, and I texted him back because he texted me that I missed your call and stuff. But that’s pretty much it."

However, much like his first virtual press conference with local media on draft night, where he complimented Wilson profusely, Mims made sure to close his anecdote in a similar fashion.

"[I'm] just looking forward to playing with him," Mims said of Wilson. "[He’s] one of the best quarterbacks in our game. The film speaks for himself, he speaks for himself. I mean, there’s not really much I can say.”

While Wilson wasn't too pleased by the film he put up last year in Nathaniel Hackett's offense, things are looking up for the nine-time Pro Bowler in 2023. Not only did he get a speedy, explosive weapon added to the arsenal in Mims, but a new offensive mastermind head coach in Sean Payton, and massive upgrades on the O-line.

Time will tell what sort of chemistry Wilson will be able to forge with the rookie Mims this season. But with KJ Hamler sidelined with an offseason injury, Mims will have a great opportunity to crack the lineup and be the fourth wide receiver on the field this season.
