The Denver Broncos' re-signing of Kareem Jackson could have less to do with Jackson and more about his successor. Per 9NEWS insider Mike Klis, the Broncos "communicated to Jackson he may have to take a reduced role" behind third-year safety Caden Sterns, contingent on the latter's health.

Sterns is coming off hip surgery and might not be ready for the start of July training camp, Klis reported Monday.

A former fifth-round pick, Sterns has played in 20 of a possible 34 regular-season games for the Broncos and made only five appearances last season before a nagging hip ailment — which dated back to college — sent him to injured reserve.

The Texas product, however, has shown flashes of brilliance when on the field, collecting 36 solo tackles, nine pass breakups, four interceptions, and two sacks across 586 total defensive snaps. He particularly excels where Jackson doesn't: pass coverage.

But availability is the best ability in the NFL, and Jackson, if nothing else, is a durable and dependable veteran, having missed just two games over the last three seasons. He's a terrific locker-room presence and still very much a force against opposing rushing attacks.

"He’s a unique leader, he can still play," Broncos general manager George Paton told Klis after the 2023 draft.

Such is why, despite Sterns' budding star and the addition of rookie JL Skinner, Denver inked Jackson, 35, to a one-year, $2,667,500 million contract to return for a fifth campaign in the Mile High City.

At worst, Jackson will function as the third safety under defensive coordinator Vance Joseph, his former position coach with the Texans. At best, he'll continue keeping the seat warm opposite Justin Simmons until Sterns is physically able.

“I love K-Jack. He is a big part of this group,” Joseph told Denver7's Troy Renck on Monday.
