The Denver Broncos conducted a free-agent tryout on Monday — and no, despite the glaring need, it wasn't a defensive lineman.

Per the NFL transaction wire, the Broncos brought in second-year cornerback Mark Gilbert, who presumably left the Centura Health Training Center without a contract.

The cousin of impending Hall of Fame CB Darrelle Revis, Gilbert went undrafted out of Duke in 2021 and spent some time on the Pittsburgh Steelers' practice squad before landing with the Detroit Lions, for whom he appeared in eight games as a rookie, notching two solo tackles, one pass deflection, and a forced fumble.

Following a return to the Steelers' taxi squad last season, Gilbert (6-1, 190) took his talents to the Pittsburgh Maulers of the United States Football League. He led all players with four interceptions en route to All-USFL Team honors.

"Gilbert has played just four games and 226 snaps over the last three seasons due to major injuries to his hip and foot that have required surgery," reads his NFL.com pre-draft scouting profile. "It takes a trip back to 2017 tape to find the player that was a draftable playmaker with confidence and ball skills resulting in 21 passes defensed, including six interceptions. With a lack of desired build and an expanding history of durability concerns it is highly likely that Gilbert will have to prove himself through an undrafted free agent route."

The Broncos are set atop their depth chart at cornerback, with Patrick Surtain II, Damarri Mathis, K'Waun Williams, and Riley Moss locked into roster spots. Behind them are several players vying for backup snaps, including Tremon Smith, Essang Bassey, and Ja'Quan McMillian.
