Kareem Jackson's Remark on Sean Payton 'No Disrespect' to Past Coaches

Kareem Jackson might find his next meeting with Vic Fangio or Gary Kubiak to be a bit awkward.

Sean Payton's approach with the Denver Broncos has provided a stark contrast to his head-coaching predecessors. Payton's style particularly appeals to veteran players, who seem to respond to the kind of uncompromising straight-to-the-point coaching he brings to the table.

Veteran Broncos safety Kareem Jackson was glowing in his praise for Payton, even if it might be slightly awkward when he runs into the likes of Vic Fangio at a later stage.

“And this is no disrespect to any of my other coaches that I’ve been around, but I haven’t been around a football mind like that in my career,” Jackson said via Denver Sports' Andrew Mason. “Just his attention to detail, the way he’s teaching everybody and taking chances on the field to stop things and coach the moments.”

After a face-to-face meeting with Payton, where his role was discussed, Jackson caught the vision, signing a one-year deal with a shockingly low amount of guaranteed money. After sitting down with Payton, though, the veteran safety decided that "it's not all about the money," and put pen to paper.

Training camp will arrive in late July, and it's primed to be a compelling spectacle, especially with how Payton has provided everyone at Broncos HQ with a massive injection of confidence. Further proof that his command will be more focused and professional than previous head-coaching regimes in Denver came on Thursday after the Broncos' last practice of the offseason training program.

One day previously, Payton stipulated that because time is limited during the offseason, the best policy is to keep on grinding.

"The times constraints tomorrow are much different," Payton said on following Wednesday's minicamp practice. "Basically, there’s ‘X’ number of hours that they give you for three days. We took the big chunks yesterday and today. Tomorrow will be a much shorter practice, but it’ll be practice.”

The absence of what Nathaniel Hackett called 'field days' on Payton's watch shouldn't come as much of a surprise, as the Broncos have become a habitually losing franchise and need to find a new direction badly. Even a minor skirmish between reserve tight end Tommy Hudson and pass rusher Nik Bonitto was subject to an instant Payton coaching deep dive on the perils of incurring silly penalties

“We have to be able to understand—discipline-wise—how to get to the edge, but not cross the line,’’ Payton said.

At every given opportunity, the Broncos are learning that their veteran coach is going to read and react on the spot. New Broncos special teams coordinator Ben Kotwica spent time serving in actual war zones like Bosnia and Iraq, so it’s safe to say he knows a thing or two about what strong leadership looks like.

In Payton, Kotwica is now working under a boss who will double down on the details, and it's inspiring him as he settles into his role with the Broncos.

"I’ve used those experiences from the military. That’s what has been great about coach Payton—attention to detail, time on task, delegating authority. There is a whole plethora of things,” Kotwica said last week. "The one thing I’ve seen here with coach Payton is the leadership. I don’t think leadership is something you can put your finger on, but you can feel it. That’s what I’ve seen so far.”
