So many unique dynamics have to work out right if Sean Payton is going to break the Denver Broncos out of their long-standing playoff funk. Payton took his own sweet time to hand-pick the assistant coaches he felt could really help his project get off the ground.

Along the way, Payton has made a couple of hires that could quite rationally be regarded as being a tad risky. In particular, many around the league fully expected a solid veteran quarterback coach to be hired to work alongside Russell Wilson.

Given the critical importance of piecing the fractured signal caller back together, it wasn't widely regarded as being a responsibility Payton would hand over to a relative novice.

And yet, it was 2022 New York Giants backup quarterback Davis Webb who decided to abruptly hang up his cleats at only the tender age of 28 years old when Payton came calling. The fact that notable NFL figures, like former Giants quarterback Eli Manning, and current New York Brian Daboll, both spoke so highly of Webb's football knowledge went a long way. And then Payton saw it up close.

“He had a file on his computer of every game plan that he’s ever had since he was in high school, then college (at) Texas Tech,” Payton said via The Athletic. “It was really impressive just going through the process.”

Having Broncos GM George Paton sitting in on the interview process when Webb came to town also appeared to be extremely beneficial. Paton revealed that he and the offensive staff were more than impressed by the ambitious soon-to-be retired quarterback; they were blown away.

“I sat in there with Davis and the offensive staff and he blew them away,” Paton said.

Webb has to make sure that he first gains the respect of Wilson, a man who's six years his elder. What has already been firmly established by Payton is that any potential road roadblocks to the coaches getting the undivided attention of their players will be ruthlessly bulldozed aside.

Gone are Wilson's office upstairs and his privileged in-house access, which was afforded to his own personal entourage under failed head coach Nathaniel Hackett.

It all suggests Webb will get a clear run at gaining the trust of a veteran quarterback who badly needs his inner circle to close ranks around him. Webb's reputation as a detail-driven, around-the-clock football geek should appeal to Wilson, who has always prided himself on being a first-in and last-out-of-the-building type of leader.

Reassuringly, Payton will be close at hand to iron out whatever wrinkles might crop up, but hopefully without treading on too many toes. Payton is banking on Webb's relative youth not being a major obstacle to any future success.
