Are The Browns Considering An Extension For Nick Chubb?

While some have speculated the Browns could move move on from running back Nick Chubb as a cap saving measure, a report from Cleveland.com suggests the team is actually more likely to extend the star running back.

When Nick Chubb went down with a gruesome knee injury in Week 2 of the season, there was a lingering fear among Browns fans that it may be the last time they'd see him with the team.

As the All-Pro running back enters the final year of his deal with a cap hit of $15 million, Cleveland could release him and save around $11 million this offseason. In most cases that type of discrepancy would make the player an obvious cap casualty While some are starting to speculate that Chubb could suffer a similar fate a report from Cleveland.com suggests the Browns are thinking the opposite.

Sep 18, 2023; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA; Cleveland Browns running back Nick Chubb (24) is taken from the field on a cart after suffering an apparent injury against the Pittsburgh Steelers during the second quarter at Acrisure Stadium.

According to Mary Kay Cabot, as the league gets ready to converge on Indianapolis next week for the NFL Combine the organization has plans to meet with Chubb's representatives about not only attempting to work out a restructured deal but potentially an extension as well. Cabot notes that had Chubb made it through the 2023 season unscathed, the Browns likely would have looked to extend him and move around some of the money he's owed this year anyway.

Chubb has been at the forefront of making sure his running back brethren across the NFL get paid what they deserve so it remains to be seen what type of re-worked contract he'd accept. One route could be to work out an incentive laden deal that allows the star tailback to make more money if he hits certain marks throughout the season.

General manager Andrew Berry seemed adamant about one thing during his end of season press conference though – the organization doesn't want the final scene of 28-year-old's time in Cleveland to be getting carted off with a torn ACL and MCL.

"Nobody wants to see that carry in Pittsburgh be the last time he carries the ball for the Cleveland Browns,” Berry said. “Obviously there are things that we’ll have to work through, but that would not be our intention. We obviously will work to keep him on the team."

The next few weeks should be fairly revealing in terms of the Browns plans for Chubb, but fans should expect to see him back with the team in some capacity next fall.
