NFL Trade Rumors: Proposal Brings 49ers QB to Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Should the Tampa Bay Buccaneers make a play on the young quarterback from the San Francisco 49ers?

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are still uncertain about their starting quarterback and preseason football is right around the corner. Even after plenty of training camp practices, there's no conclusion to the battle.

Tom Brady's retirement left a massive void at the quarterback position, and, eventually, the team will have to make a play for a franchise quarterback. Whether it be trading for a young quarterback or taking one in the draft, a push for another Super Bowl will likely have to include a change at the position.

One young quarterback the Buccaneers could take a flyer on is San Francisco 49ers former No. 3 pick quarterback Trey Lance, as noted by The 33rd Team's Jeff Diamond.

Baker Mayfield and Kyle Trask are currently the two quarterbacks battling for the starting quarterback position. Lance would fit right into the battle and could be a great, cheap option for the team to try and build around. If the pairing doesn't work out, the team doesn't lose much at all.

“The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Atlanta Falcons or Washington Commanders all have questionable quarterback situations with Baker Mayfield (Buccaneers), Desmond Ridder (Falcons) and Sam Howell or Jacoby Brissett (Commanders) as projected starters,” Diamond writes. “All three teams can easily afford Lance’s minimal base salary this season.”

At 23-years-old, Lance has more than enough time to turn things around. He's only played four games at the pro level, and there's plenty of unknown about his game, as there is plenty of unknown for the current iteration of the Buccaneers roster.

Theoretically, with a simple playbook at first, Lance could help the Buccaneers' offensive versatility. He's a dual-threat quarterback and could keep the options open offensively.

Whatever quarterback is under center to start the season will benefit from having targets like Mike Evans and Chris Godwin. Furthermore, Rachaad White could be due for a breakout season, helping the offense that much more.
