NFL kicker Rodrigo Blankenship is working his way back into the NFL, and that has led him to Tampa Bay to try out for the Buccaneers. His tryout is going through the Bucs’ mandatory minicamp that is actively going on.

Currently, the Buccaneers have just one kicker on the roster, that being Chase McLaughlin. For Blankenship, he would be a solid choice to bring into the position room. He had a solid start to his career as an undrafted free agent for the Indianapolis Colts in 2020, before suffering an injury in 2021 and having a rough start this past season, leading to him being cut after one game. He spent some time with the Cardinals after that.

Being with the Bucs for the minicamp, Blankenship is teammates with former No. 1 overall pick out of Oklahoma and now journeyman, Baker Mayfield.
Being in college at the same time, with Blankenship coming from Georgia, the two had matched up in college. It’s no surprise, though, as both come from colleges that consistently compete at the highest level while producing solid NFL talent.
Their matchup history comes from a semifinal college football playoff game in the 2017 season. Blankenship’s Georgia Bulldogs took down Mayfield’s Oklahoma Sooners in a 54-48 overtime matchup.

Naturally, when the two met up at minicamp, Mayfield had to voice his disapproval of the former Bulldog.

“I still don’t like you,” Mayfield joked as he welcomed Blankenship to minicamp.

Though six years later, the two players haven’t forgotten the close game that sent Blankenship to the National Championship in the 2017 season.
This time around, the two players could end up as teammates, and Blankenship and the special teams will have Mayfield’s back as he guides the Buccaneers through the post-Tom Brady era for the first season without the legendary quarterback.
