Cardinals Silent as NFC West Rivals Only Get Stronger in Free Agency

The Arizona Cardinals were merely bystanders on the first day of NFL free agency.

The Arizona Cardinals were never really set to make serious noise in free agency.

Yet that didn't stop avid fans and followers of the team from being vocally disappointed with Arizona's lack on involvement when the league's legal tampering period opened yesterday.

At least the social media team accomplished something:

That's not to say the Cardinals didn't actually do anything. They brought back OT Kelvin Beachum on a two-year, $5.15 million deal.

However, the loss of DE Zach Allen to the Denver Broncos on a three-year, $45.75 million deal was a blow to a Cardinals defense that just lost J.J. Watt to retirement.

As this article is typed, Arizona's $33.13 million is the third most in the league behind the Bears ($50.5 million) and Atlanta Falcons ($39.9 million), who forked over a total of $212 million in total contract value on the first day.

While the Cardinals and Los Angeles Rams sat around (for two very different reasons), their fellow NFC West rivals only got stronger.

The San Francisco 49ers signed former Philadelphia Eagles DT Javon Hargrave on a four-year, $84 million deal to pair him alongside Arik Armstead and Nick Bosa.

The Seattle Seahawks countered later in the evening by signing former Broncos DT Dre'mont Jones to a three-year, $51 million deal.

Both teams figure to be serious players for the NFC West crown in 2023 while the Rams and Cardinals simply try to figure our their futures.
