Cardinals Fans' Latest Outrage Toward Monti Ossenfort Doesn't Make Sense

ARIZONA — There's plenty to be displeased with in terms of the Arizona Cardinals and the overall body of work provided by general manager Monti Ossenfort.

After firing head coach Jonathan Gannon, all eyes are on Ossenfort as he enters his fourth season running the team. The organization largely has underachieved during Ossenfort's watch, and the odds are again stacked against the Cardinals with 2026 here.

The Cardinals just cut their roster down to 53 players with training camp and preseason play officially in the rearview mirror.

The waiver wire also came and went, and the Cardinals were bystanders — which prompted quite the response from fans online about Arizona's inactivity and unwillingness to bring in fresh blood.

Cardinals head coach Mike LaFleur — speaking with reporters yesterday — said Arizona liked the bodies they currently have in the building.

"We do like who we have, but you're always trying to upgrade the roster," said LaFleur.

"But you have to say is this guy one: do we think he is going to upgrade the roster? And two, if it's close, the time on task that you have with the guys currently in the building compared to a guy coming off the street that has to learn our building, have to learn the coach, have to learn the scheme, all those kind of things. There's a lot that goes into it to decide if you're gonna swap someone out."

The Cardinals opted not to hit the waiver wire — why?

Only 14 NFL teams claimed somebody on waivers yesterday, which is just under 50% of the league.

The likelihood of a suitable player being available for the Cardinals to really upgrade the roster is low. Most likely, if they're not good enough to make the final 53-man roster elsewhere, there's a strong chance they couldn't improve the Cardinals.

Of course, there's exceptions to this. Talent seemingly slips through the cracks every year during this period of massive roster shifting.

Yet even in the event the Cardinals added a new player to their freshly established 53-man roster... then what? Is Arizona suddenly in a position to push for a playoff spot?

In reality, there's no player the Cardinals could have added to really swing momentum in their favor. Nobody available was going to change the complexion and outlook of this team in 2026.

Theres' plenty to question about Arizona entering this season — their lack of activity on the waiver wire shouldn't be on that list.
