ARIZONA -- The Arizona Cardinals no longer employ Zach Ertz as of today. 

The tight end reportedly requested his release in order to pursue a championship as the regular season begins to wind down. Arizona - sitting at just 2-10 on the season - simply isn't a viable option now or in the future to get Ertz a ring before he retires. 

The 33-year-old former Pro Bowl tight end is set to waivers but isn't expected to be claimed, which would make him a free agent capable of signing anywhere. 

In seven games this season, Ertz caught 27 of 43 targets for 187 yards and one touchdown. He is now eligible to return off injured reserve from a torn quad injury that caused him to miss five games. 

NFL insider Jordan Schultz highlighted two teams to watch in the Ertz sweepstakes: Philadelphia and Baltimore. 

"Keep an eye on the #Ravens (Mark Andrews out for the season) and possible #Eagles reunion (still missing Dallas Goedert) as potential landing spots for Zach Ertz — should he clear waivers," Schultz wrote on Twitter.

"The 3x Pro Bowl TE wants to play for a contender, while both Lamar Jackson and Jalen Hurts are MVP candidates."

Both would make sense for Ertz, as there are obvious holes to fill at the tight end position on both rosters. 

Ertz is a former Eagle who is just 11 receptions from clinching Philadelphia's all-time receptions record from Harold Carmichael while Ertz could opt to play with names such as Lamar Jackson, Odell Beckham Jr. and others in Baltimore.

For now, Arizona turns to Trey McBride as their TE1. The second-year tight end has impressed and had cemented himself as a starter in Ertz's absence.
