Report: Don’t Expect Cardinals QB Kyler Murray Back Soon

In this story:

In just two days, the Arizona Cardinals are able to remove QB Kyler Murray from the PUP list (physically unable to perform) after the quarterback was placed on the list during training camp and wasn’t removed before the regular season.

He was forced to miss the first four weeks at minimum.

Murray - still working his way back from a torn ACL and meniscus suffered in Week 14 of last season - hasn’t given a clear update on when he expects to return, and Cardinals HC Jonathan Gannon has played the same game, too.

Today, ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter reported the following on Murray’s timetable:

Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray is not expected to come off the Physically Unable to Perform list when he becomes eligible Monday and still is considered weeks away from playing, league sources told ESPN. … The former No. 1 overall draft selection wants and plans to return this season, but he slowly is ramping up his comeback in attempt to rejoin the Cardinals, sources told ESPN.”

Schefter also adds that, “For now, Murray would like to return -- sources say he likes the direction of the team and the offense, as well as the energy that new head coach Jonathan Gannon has brought -- but he still is recovering and needs to start practicing.”

Ahead of the season, Murray told reporters he wasn’t sure when he’d return to action after previously being on the team’s “Flight Plan” YouTube series with a targeted date for Week 1.

Murray obviously didn’t meet the lofty goal, though he did speak with FOX’s broadcast team during their opening game in Washington, where he gave a minor update:

"I feel like I'm coming along and I'm on the right track.”

The Cardinals are currently 1-2 with Josh Dobbs as their starting quarterback - who they traded for towards the end of preseason play before cutting Colt McCoy.

Rookie QB Clayton Tune has been Dobbs’ backup option in Arizona.

The return of Murray feels inevitable despite constant reports and rumors suggesting he may sit the entire season.

However, one person told Schefter Murray’s return shouldn’t be expected soon.

"It just doesn't feel like [Murray's return] is imminent.”
