The NFL offseason is arguably the most hectic and drama-filled part of the calendar year in football, with plenty of speculation and rumors being thrown around. The age of social media adds even more fuel to that fire, as players, coaches and front office executives alike can take to Twitter to share their thoughts. For free agent offensive tackle Taylor Lewan, he apparently woke up on Wednesday thinking about the Kansas City Chiefs

Lewan, who turns 32 in July, was released by the Tennessee Titans in February after spending each of his first nine seasons with the team. The veteran is a three-time Pro Bowler and one of the bigger names on the free agent market as far as tackles are concerned, and his career resume is admittedly impressive. With that said, the last few years have been anything but that for him.

Dating back to the 2020 campaign, Lewan has played in just 20 combined games. After tearing his ACL three seasons ago and then making 13 starts for Tennessee in 2021, last year was cut short due to another knee injury and the former first-round pick was active just twice all season long as a result. He's no longer able to be relied upon to be available for any extended period of time, which could drive down his market this offseason.

The last time Lewan was remotely healthy, 2021, he played 846 offensive snaps for the Titans and surrendered just four sacks all season long. Additionally, he was tied for 40th among tackles with four penalties called against him and his 70.9 Pro Football Focus composite grade was certainly respectable. Due to the assumed natural aging curve in the NFL and the multiple issues with his knee, however, it's unrealistic for a team to expect him to fully bounce back to his previous form.

Lewan has contemplated retirement this offseason, so any potential signing with a team would likely be of the short-term variety. The Chiefs have a handful of days left to iron out a contract extension with Orlando Brown Jr. and while it seems highly unlikely that an updated pact is agreed upon, adding Lewan into the fold would need to be accompanied by another move elsewhere due to the inherent risk of the situation. If Kansas City believes Lewan still has a decent chunk of his once-elite athletic profile left in the tank, though, perhaps that tweet could become more than just a spontaneous comment.
