The new NFL league year is still a bit away, but the Kansas City Chiefs are wasting no time making moves as far as their coaching staff is concerned. On Friday afternoon, the team announced via Twitter that Matt Nagy is being promoted to offensive coordinator.

Nagy, who just wrapped up his sixth season with the Chiefs, returned to the franchise for the 2022-23 campaign and served as Andy Reid's senior offensive assistant and quarterbacks coach. The 44-year-old had spent the previous four years with the Chicago Bears as a head coach before being fired and choosing to come back to Kansas City. Now, at the end of his return season, Nagy is ending up back in a role he's familiar with.

Nagy's job in Chicago stemmed from his performance as the Chiefs' offensive coordinator back in 2017, a year in which then-starting quarterback Alex Smith had arguably his best season as a pro. Nagy was succeeded by Eric Bieniemy, who worked in the role for five years before departing this offseason for the Washington Commanders and being formally introduced on Thursday.

It was reported at the time of Bieniemy's hire that Nagy was the "top choice" to become the new offensive coordinator in Kansas City, and that likelihood never wavered. He was the presumed leader in the clubhouse all along, and now he'll work hand-in-hand with Reid once again to scheme up an offensive plan of attack for the Chiefs this coming season. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes has given glowing reviews of Nagy dating back to his initial offensive coordinator days back in 2017, which bodes well for Kansas City's offense now that Nagy is back in the same position.

Additional changes could be on the horizon for the Chiefs' offensive coaching staff, as it was reported during the week by Josina Anderson of CBS Sports that running backs coach Greg Lewis was visiting with the Commanders to potentially join Bieniemy's new staff. On top of that, Anderson reported on Thursday that Kansas City "explored the possibility" of adding renowned offensive mind Pep Hamilton into the fold in some capacity. While Nagy being second in command may not lead to a widescale shift in philosophy, Reid's staff is on its way to being somewhat of a new-look group for the 2023 offseason and beyond — especially considering that Nagy's promotion now leaves an opening for his previous role.
