In this story:
The Kansas City Chiefs' 2023 NFL Draft class consists of seven players, and the first member of that class signed a rookie-scale contract to usher in the weekend. On Friday, per Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston, defensive back Chamarri Conner inked a four-year deal worth $4.591 million. The fourth-round pick notched a signing bonus of $751,364 as well.

According to Spotrac, Conner's signing bonus is split evenly on the Chiefs' salary sheet across all four years of his deal ($187,842 per year). He carries a cap hit of $937,842 for the 2023 campaign, centered around a base salary of $750,000. All things considered, it's a pretty standard contract for a fourth-round pick. Here are Conner's base salary allotments for the next three years, accompanied by his split signing bonus (for cap purposes) and his cap hits in years two, three and four of the deal:
- 2024: $915,000 base, $187,842 signing bonus, $1.10M cap hit
- 2025: $1.03M base, $187,842 signing bonus, $1.22M cap hit
- 2026: $1.14M base, $187,842 signing bonus, $1.33M cap hit
As far as dead cap is concerned, Kansas City can part ways with Conner for decreasing penalties over the course of his rookie contract. That figure would be $751,368 in 2023, with totals of $563,526, $375,684 and $187,842 in 2024, 2025 and 2026. Conner, who turns 23 in July, will have an opportunity to enter unrestricted free agency at the conclusion of the 2026-27 season.
The Chiefs traded up for Conner in this year's draft, sending pick No. 134 and a 2024 fifth-round offering to the Minnesota Vikings in exchange for him. General manager Brett Veach has recently praised Conner's ability to do a little bit of everything in the secondary, as well as thrive as a potential special teams option. The former Virginia Tech standout is expected to make the Chiefs' final 53-man roster later this year and help fill out a safety depth chart that already has the likes of Justin Reid, Bryan Cook, Mike Edwards and potentially Deon Bush in the fold ahead of him.
