Colts' Anthony Richardson Begins Throwing After Shoulder Surgery

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson has taken the next step in his rehab.

The 2023 NFL season may have just ended, but teams and players are already looking forward to 2024.

That includes the Indianapolis Colts and franchise quarterback Anthony Richardson. Richardson's rookie season was cut short after the quarterback suffered a sprained AC joint in the Colts' Week 5 win over the Tennessee Titans. After consulting with multiple doctors, the Colts and Richardson concluded that season-ending surgery was the best decision for his long-term health.

Fast forward to today, and Richardson is working hard return to the field. Richardson took a big step forward in his rehab on Tuesday as he began throwing for the first time since his injury. A clip of the 21-year-old quarterback throwing the ball was posted on X by Deiric Jackson, Richardson's agent.

Seeing Richardson begin to throw again is great news for him and the Colts. When Richardson last spoke to the media in January, he indicated that he was ahead of schedule and pushing to get back as quickly as possible.

"Pretty good," Richardson admitted when asked how rehab was going. "I'm excited. Every day I'm trying to push the trainers to go a little harder with me so I can get back to throwing, get back on the field. So, everything's smooth right now. I'm excited, I'm just ready to start throwing again."

The goal for Richardson is to be ready when the Colts begin offseason workouts in April. While the quarterback wants to get back as quickly as possible, he must continue to be smart and not push himself back before he is ready. The last thing anybody wants is for Richardson to experience a setback in his recovery.

However, seeing Richardson begin to throw this early in the offseason is encouraging for the Colts organization and fans alike. While Richardson only appeared in four games, he displayed superstar potential in Shane Steichen's offense. Richardson himself is ready to get back on the field with the likes of Jonathan Taylor and Michael Pittman Jr. as Indy strives to rejoin the league's elite.

"It excites me a lot," Richardson commented. "When I first got here that was my main focus. Playoffs, playoffs, playoffs. Get there so we can be closer to a Super Bowl. It's hard in this league, but the team, they fought through it. We got close. But I'm excited, excited to get back with the guys, excited to grind hard, excited to get ready for next season. I know what we're capable of, I know what we can do, and I'm just ready to showcase that to the world."

Richardson still has work to do to get back to 100%. But seeing the Colts' quarterback spinning the football again is a sight that all football fans love to see.
