In this story:

The Indianapolis Colts are currently in the midst of deciding what to do with their cornerback group after the news broke of veteran Isaiah Rodgers Sr. committing league gambling infractions.

While the news is still swirling, the Colts might want to think about the next move to fill the void that may be left behind should Rodgers be suspended from the team.

With this potential situation becoming very likely, who should Indianapolis look into signing to the team from free agency?

There are multiple cornerbacks still available, but three truly stand out who could bring a veteran presence to assist with a very young cornerback committee, but who can also play in Week 1 with the efficiency that Gus Bradley's defense needs. Let's get started.

#1) Casey Hayward

Yes, it's true that Hayward will be 34 years of age when Week 1 hits the schedule, but with the situation the Colts are in, this may be just what they need.

Hayward brings a wealth of knowledge at the position to rookies like JuJu Brents, Darius Rush, and Jaylon Jones. With an impressive 11-year NFL career, Hayward has played for four teams and compiled two Pro Bowl nominations (2016 and 2017 with the Los Angeles Chargers).

Last season he played for the Atlanta Falcons and has put together a career worthy of another chance to play. Below are the numbers that display Hayward's work.

  • 152 games
  • 448 tackles
  • 25 interceptions
  • 112 passes defended
  • 3 defensive TDs

#2) Fabian Moreau

A name that may not jump off the page to most NFL fans, Moreau has been in the league for six seasons and is coming off of one of his best seasons as a pro.

In 2022 with the New York Giants, Moreau had a career-high in tackles (66) and was able to get his hands on 10 passes for deflections (second-best in his career), and in only 14 games.

While he has bounced around to different teams over the past couple of seasons, he will still be 29 years of age and still has plenty of football left to play. The Colts could be a great destination for Moreau to build off of a nice 2022.

#3) Marcus Peters

This is undoubtedly the biggest available name remaining that the Colts could sign. While it will be pricier than the others, Peters also may be the best cornerback that Indianapolis could ink to a contract.

Peters is an eight-year pro and has three Pro Bowl nominations and two First-Team All-Pro selections to his name (2016 with the Kansas City Chiefs and 2019 with the Los Angeles Rams/Baltimore Ravens). He's also been with successful franchises that include the Chiefs (2015-17), the Los Angeles Rams (2018-19), and the Baltimore Ravens (2019-22).

Through his illustrious tenure, he's played 104 total games and added on 346 tackles, 32 interceptions, and an impressive 7 defensive TDs (six interception scores).

If Indianapolis is willing to fork over more cash, this is without question the biggest impact signing to the defensive back room and would help to develop the three rookies that the Colts drafted.

Outlook

With the news of Rodgers, it's a tough pill to swallow for the Colts.

Rodgers is a talent that has massive upside and experience. However, the situation at hand calls for general manager Chris Ballard and Co. to act. One of these three corners could prove far more valuable than the dollar amount they may cost.

The Colts will need help to fill the veteran void at defensive back. Look for these three players to be among the names considered to help Bradley's defense add much-needed depth for the 2023 campaign.
