Indianapolis Colts Could Be Preparing to Bring in New Free Agent

The Indianapolis Colts are restructuring one of their most prolific players’ contracts; is this a sign that they’re opening room to bring in more talent?

It was reported by the NFL Network’s own Tom Pelissero that the Indianapolis Colts are converting money from defensive tackle DeForest Buckner’s contract to open cap room.

This is significant, given that it saves the team $2.5 million in cap space. While Buckner will still make $19.75 million guaranteed in 2022, it’s deserved and helps the Colts in the long run.

This also squashes any rumors that Buckner is unhappy with the Indianapolis franchise. Moving his contract around is one of the most selfless things an NFL player can do, showing Buckner isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.

Also, it begs the question: “Who is Indianapolis thinking of signing?” With $2.5 million opened up, that is significant enough to bring in more talent to the team that can help a rookie quarterback. Even though it’s not guaranteed, the Colts are likely taking their next franchise quarterback in the draft.

On the other side, this could help new coach Shane Steichen by adding more depth at the wide receiver position or offensive line. The Colts still need to pack a punch at the slot receiver position and could now do so in free agency again.

However, there is more need for a cornerback than anything else. This could be a sign they’re trying to sign a Shaquill Griffin or another veteran to help the secondary.

Regardless of the “why,” it’s encouraging to see this happening with the Colts. This shows dedication from Buckner and enough money freed up to potentially bring in more playmakers for a young squad with a new football era ahead.
