The Indianapolis Colts are retaining veteran edge rusher Tyquan Lewis, per NFL insider Ian Rapoport, who broke the news.

Rapoport posted the news on X:

"Another re-signing for the #Colts: Source says they are bringing back edge Tyquan Lewis."

However, it also seems that it won't be a one-year deal like in 2023, but two instead.

IndyStar's Joel Erickson confirmed the deal's length, with the official worth later revealed to be two years, $12 million ($7.7 million guaranteed).

Lewis is not a starting defensive end, but he was one of the most consistent players at pressuring opposing quarterbacks. Per Pro Football Focus, Lewis applied 44 pressures on passers. This number is impressive because it ranks third on the defense behind only defensive tackle and Pro Bowler DeForest Buckner (52) and fellow edge rusher Samson Ebukam (48). Lewis also accomplished this consistency while logging just 437 snaps.

The future of Lewis with the Colts was in doubt following a second season-ending injury to his left patellar tendon in 2022. He sustained the first one to his right tendon in 2021. However, Indy decided to keep Lewis again on another one-year deal worth $2.1 million, per Spotrac. Indianapolis keeping him paid off, as Lewis was a constant motor when on the field against opponent offensive lines. Along with the aforementioned pressures, he tallied 25 tackles, three passes defended, nine tackles for loss, and 13 QB hits (all career bests). He also grabbed 4.0 sacks, which ties his mark in 2020.

Lewis has a great NFL story and showcased incredible value for the Colts' defense in 2023. Given the momentum, Lewis could have an impactful 2024 now that he is staying in the Circle City. This signing makes perfect sense and could result in Lewis making even more noise on the defensive front if he can remain on the field as he did in 2023. The former Ohio State Buckeye will continue to be surrounded by great talent with a new defensive line coach in Charlie Partridge to continue bringing the best out of him.
