The Indianapolis Colts are shoring up the tight end group ahead of the NFL Draft.

Friday afternoon the report came through that NFL veteran Pharaoh Brown has agreed to terms with the Colts, per Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.

Brown is a five-year veteran of the league, playing for three different squads (2017-then Oakland Raiders; 2019-Cleveland Browns; 2020-2021-Houston Texans; 2022-Texans and Browns). Known more for his blocking ability than receiving, he will likely come into the heavier sets to help seal up run-blocking for the Colts.

Even though blocking is his specialty, Brown has contributed 51 catches for 478 yards and two touchdowns to his offenses throughout his NFL career. He’s also 6’6”, meaning he could do damage in the red zone.

With this addition, the Colts are not taking any chances on blocking at the tight end position. This is also likely due to the group underwhelming immensely with this skill in 2022. Against normal habits, we’ve seen Colts general manager Chris Ballard fill spots on the roster that needed them, and it continues with Brown.

This will ultimately beg the question of if the Colts will keep or trade veteran tight end Mo Alie-Cox. Now with a tight-end group that consists of Jelani Woods, Kylen Granson, Drew Ogletree, and Brown, Alie-Cox may be traded off. It was confirmed earlier in the season that the Colts were open to trading both Alie-Cox and center Ryan Kelly. The latter was retained.

Will Ballard do the same with the former? It’ll be interesting how it plays out with this latest signing.
