Commanders CB Emmanuel Forbes 'Loving the Defense'

Just two preseason games into his NFL career Washington Commanders rookie cornerback Emmanuel Forbes is making himself comfortable in his new defense.

LANDOVER, Md. -- The Washington Commanders came away with a big win over the Baltimore Ravens on Monday night sending their opponent home with a 29-28 loss.

With the Ravens looking to extend their preseason winning streak to 25 games, at least one Commanders defender is happy to be part of the effort that prevented the milestone.

"Apparently, they had a 24-game winning streak, and we snapped that," cornerback Emmanuel Forbes said. "I just like the way we came back and fought and never gave up."

While Forbes likes the win, the rookie cornerback says he's loving playing in defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio's scheme.

"I'm loving the defense," Forbes said. "I'm loving the way we fly around every day in practice and we just continue to get better."

Last week against the Cleveland Browns part of that flying around the Washington defense resulted in Forbes making a key tackle during a goal-line stand early in the first quarter.

Detractors who continue to question whether or not Forbes can keep up with the physicality in the NFL pointed out it was only one play.

Well, on Monday against Baltimore, Forbes made a similarly impressive play shooting past would-be blockers to take down running back Melvin Gordon for no gain on a third-and-one run.

We asked coach Ron Rivera about the play after the game.

"Believe me, it's the same stuff we saw on college tape," Rivera said. "I mean, that's one of the things that, you know, he's fearless. He'll throw his body around and he does a nice job."

Playing with confidence is just one sign that a player is comfortable within the framework he's working in, and Forbes is certainly doing that.

Along with fellow rookie defensive back Quan Martin's interception Monday night the Commanders are getting solid early returns on their first two NFL Draft picks this season.

And that's something everyone around Washington can love.
