San Francisco 49ers Exec Adam Peters: Favorite As Next GM for Washington Commanders?

San Francisco 49ers Exec Adam Peters: Favorite As Next GM for Washington Commanders?

When the Washington Commanders had their last top decision maker vacancy in Jan. 2021, they went to the San Francisco 49ers' personnel department.

Washington hired Martin Mayhew, who was San Francisco's vice president of player personnel.

Now three years later, the Commanders are expected to part ways with Mayhew, and though they haven't officially done so yet, have already begun making interview requests.

Perhaps most notably, Washington has returned to San Francisco's well, with eyes set on 49ers assistant general manager Adam Peters.

According to Sports Illustrated, Peters interviewed for the Commanders' head of football operations job Tuesday night in Miami, meeting with owner Josh Harris and consultants Bob Myers and Rick Spielman at Harris' house.

Better yet, The Athletic reported Tuesday that Peters heading to Washington is becoming a common thought.

"A lot of people I've talked to think that this is going to happen," The Athletic said on Washington's 106.7 The Fan radio station. "That (Peters) is going to be the guy that the Commanders hire to be their next GM."

The 44-year-old Peters has also drawn interest from the Las Vegas Raiders and Los Angeles Chargers for their vacant general manager position, as both teams have requested permission for an interview.

Washington, meanwhile, will continue to interview other candidates.

In addition to Peters, the Commanders met with Kansas City Chiefs assistant general manager Mike Borgonzi and Cleveland Browns assistant general manager Glenn Cook on Tuesday in Miami.

Washington will speak with a pair of other candidates Wednesday, bringing in Philadelphia Eagles assistant general manager Alec Halaby and Chicago Bears assistant general manager Ian Cunningham.

Further, Dallas Cowboys vice president of player personnel Will McClay has also been requested for an interview by Washington's ownership.

The Commanders are also searching to fill their head coaching vacancy after firing Ron Rivera, and there currently remains no timeline for a decision on either.

But regardless, it appears Harris, Myers, Spielman and the rest of Washington's staff have identified favorites for the football operations role ... and are in the midst of a critical two-day interview stretch that could determine the Commanders' next direction.
