In this story:

A lot went wrong for the Dallas Cowboys in 2023, from injuries to the spine of the defense and an eventual playoff collapse. Their special teams performance wasn’t one of them.

One of the best developments of last year’s lost season was the emergence of kicker Brandon Aubrey, who – while not qualifying as a rookie – enjoyed a spectacular first season in the NFL.

That, of course, came after a two-year stint with the USFL’s Birmingham Stallions – Aubrey’s first endeavor in his post-professional-soccer career.

The USFL would merge with the XFL before to create the United Football League in another attempt to create a long-standing football league during the spring months the NFL doesn’t dominate. His Birmingham Stallions survived the merger and opened their UFL season on Saturday against the Arlington Renegades.

Aubrey was in the house to show his support for his former team.

“What’s Up Stallions Fans? Brandon Aubrey here, two-time USFL champion,” he said. “Out here, cheering on our Stallions, hoping we get a big win on Opening Day. Anyway, giddy up!”

He asked for a win, and he got one. The Stallions won 27-14, led by former Day 2 NFL Draft pick and Carolina Panthers quarterback Matt Corral.

Aubrey spent the 2022 and 2023 seasons with the Stallions, making the All-USFL team in his first season and – as he noted – winning two championships.

Needless to say, his success translated well to the NFL.

In his first year as Dallas’ kicker, he set the record for the most consecutive converted field goals to start his career. He also was exceptional from deep, hitting both a 59-yard and 60-yard field goal in the same contest against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Aubrey led the league with 36 field goals on 38 total attempts. He was also 49 of 52 on extra points. After years of turbulence in the post-Dan Bailey era, Aubrey showcased his talents as one of the league’s best kickers and a legitimate weapon for the Cowboys.

As such he was rewarded with a first-team All-Pro selection.

He’ll look to return to Dallas in 2024 with and provide the consistency that may be sorely needed in a seemingly rocky 2024 campaign.
